"Thanks to the Legacy Fund, residents can spend the whole of their lives here if they outlive resources. Anyone who didn't work here might not realize what an incredible thing that is—over 400 employees serve this community, and it is the shared commitment of the staff and each donor that ensures every resident not only enjoys great care, but the highest level of dignity."

The Heritage Community Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization established to support the charitable needs of Heritage Community of Kalamazoo and the residents who live here.

Our community's promise to seniors began in 1944, when Mayor Louis Sutherland gathered together local residents to improve Kalamazoo's system for senior care. With an aging mother in need of compassionate assistance, Sutherland worked with other community members to invest in secure, comfortable living for all seniors, regardless of their ability to pay. The Michigan Department of Social Welfare, the Upjohn Company, First National Bank and Trust, the Kalamazoo Community Foundation and the Sutherland Paper Company all offered their support. The result of the community's combined efforts was, and is, Heritage Community of Kalamazoo.
